Candid Camera: Unusual Animal Antics Caught On Trail Cams

By Jishnu B

This article was originally published on travelerdoor

Trail cams are primarily used by hunters and are programmed to take pictures automatically when motion is detected. They can also be used for to photograph wildlife, to ensure security, or simply to observe animal behaviors in their natural environment. Some animal lovers have resorted to placing cameras in areas where they believe an animal will be present. Fortunately for us, these cameras captured some unexpected and hilarious animal behavior! Trail cameras have become our eyes when we are not in the woods, and they occasionally capture some strange and interesting things. Just when you thought you had seen it all, wait till you come across these peculiar animal antics.

Easter Has Been Postponed

The Easter Bunny has a difficult task to do every Easter. Christianity is a widely practiced religion worldwide, and many non-Christians also observe the holiday. Imagine trying to hide eggs for a group of that many kids. We certainly can’t!

freshedits.com

Easter appears to be on the verge of being canceled, or at the absolute least, postponed this year. That’s because that fluffy white rabbit is just a few feet away from a wild predator. When you live in a forest, it’s hard to catch a breath from predatory species.

The Generous One

Animals aren’t always given the credit they deserve for their kind behavior. A raccoon does what any good pal would do in this situation. Given that his companions are below and unable to reach the feeder, this raccoon opted to cling to the feeder for his life to feed them. Needless to say, his plan paid off.

obedienceispatriotism /Imgur

While he couldn’t eat the food because he was the one pulling on the spigot, the raccoon was able to cement many of its friendships. This raccoon now has the reign to do anything it wants since it earned the trust of its friends. This is a very generous move for a supposedly mischievous creature.

A Strange Pairing

Is that a leopard perched atop this buffalo’s back? Clearly, these two did not disobey the animal kingdom’s regulations and became buddies. They appear to have evolved a symbiotic relationship, similar to that which exists between a buffalo and oxpecker.

earthtouchnews.com

Another admittedly less exciting but truthful explanation is that the leopard is only in the background, while the buffalo is in close proximity to the camera. However, the camera created an intriguing optical illusion when it snapped this picture. This interesting illusion resulted in such an amusing pair.

The Doe Eyes To Die For

Is it strange that we’re envious of these deers’ eyelashes? It’s clearly putting its best foot forward in this photo. Deers don’t require false lashes or pricey mascara because they were born with that gorgeous doe-eyed look.

Full Draw Farm /YouTube

What she was thinking about, batting her eyelashes like that, is the actual question. Maybe she was hoping for a photo for the ‘Gram. Was she attempting to entice the audience? If that’s the case, we think she did a pretty awesome job at that.

Love From A Mother

Next up, we have a beautiful fox mother nursing her eight kids! Like many mammalian moms, the fox cares for many pups at the same time. The mother’s love is always the most selfless type of devotion. Whether a human or an animal, mothers will stop at nothing to make their babies feel comforted and happy.

fieldandstream.com

While the fox pups may have to compete for space, the mother will ensure they will all be well fed. If not, this would just be poor parenting. Regardless, this fox’s relationship with its foxy children is admirable in its own right. It’s incredibly heartwarming to come across such captures.

A Courteous Greeting

Even if you aren’t human, being courteous is always a good idea. We were surprised to see these deer balancing on their delicate hooves bipedally. It appears to be a skill that they acquired over the years. Who knew?

NDTV.com

We presume that these deer were exchanging some pleasantries. They might be talking about the weather, asking about each other’s children, or noting that a very rude bobcat was seen wandering around these parts before.

The Adorable Buckethead

Deer commonly use their antlers for defense, but they also use them to carry objects, such as this deer with a bucket between his antlers. Unfortunately, having a massive rack of antlers makes putting a bucket over your head a lot more difficult!

science-a2z.com

When you combine that with the fact that deer don’t have opposable thumbs, you might be able to figure out how this animal managed to get a bucket positioned in that manner. Either way, we are living for this latest bucket fashion.

Teamwork Goes a Long Way

Few lessons are as important in today’s world as the value of collaboration. Working together is becoming an increasingly important skill in a world that is becoming too complex for a single mind to comprehend. This critical lesson appears to have been passed down to these bears as we see a pair working together to get some treats.

net-hr

One of the bears is picking up a smaller bear and assisting it in reaching its hands into a garbage can. Maybe the momma bear’s paws were too big to get into the bin. Maybe it just wasn’t into making the effort. In any case, the bears were fed due to their adorable collaboration.

Selfie With A Raccoon

Some animals these days are now masters of the so-called photobomb. This cam view of the two deer grazing in the backdrop would have sufficed. But it was made even more fascinating by the presence of this raccoon in the spotlight. It’s almost as if it was aware of the trail’s hidden camera.

blinkforhome.com

While you can’t tell what the raccoon’s crazed eyes are looking at, you can tell it’s horribly confused. Perhaps the camera had flashed at the furry critter or it was startled by the clicking sound. Whatever it was, it directed us to this treasure.

On The Offensive

Flying squirrels are known for their airborne invasions – they can swoop through the sky. And it is here that we experience firsthand how scary such an attack may be. This concealed camera caught a deer fleeing in terror from the flying squirrel’s atrocious antics.

discovermagazine.com

You can tell by its demeanor that it is doing everything to avoid the small winged beast’s coming fury. We all know how this story ends. The deer is apprehended, the squirrel kills, and the creature moves on to the next victim. Trail Cams can sometimes reveal nature’s merciless actions as well.

A Little Too Close

We have what is appropriately referred to as a “last known image” here. A bird with a pecking problem was the culprit in this case. Its pecking habits rendered this hidden trail camera unusable for the foreseeable future.

science101.com

The bird began to peck after landing on the camera as it mistook it for a tree. Although we are a bit upset as the bird destroyed the trail camera, we got this hilarious shot instead. Trail cameras certainly capture the most bizarre situations, and we’re all here for it.

Another Symbiotic Couple

Animals, as we saw previously, occasionally enjoy riding on the backs of other animals. This seeming animal pairing is most likely beneficial to both creatures. It’s somewhat parasitic if it isn’t. While we don’t want to presume that any relationship this cool-looking is one-sided, we must consider the possibilities.

sunnyskyz.com

What we’re looking at here is a raccoon over a hog. It’s probably doing everything it can to reach its prey to feed on it. It must be hard to get things from above when you’re just a tiny raccoon. We’ve seen some of the desperate measures these guys have taken to find food previously. This is just another day in a little raccoon’s life and its struggles to find ample food.

When Friends Become Foes

The call of nature can sometimes lead to disputes with people who would otherwise be our pals. In this instance, this is the situation where two porcupines were forced to duke it out. Fortunately for us, a hidden trail cam filmed this unusual occasion.

thedelite.com

While we won’t ever know what cause the fight, the two seem to be clenching their fists in rage. We didn’t think porcupines were capable of such aggression. However, we can see that these thorny little creatures have a lot more battles in them than we might have assumed.

The Raccoon Stack

As we mentioned earlier, raccoons are known to be the most devious little animals. Due to their lower heights, it can be a chore to reach their prey higher above. However, they don’t take their height as a disadvantage and craft ingenious strategies to overcome their feeding situation.

Edgar_Otoole /Reddit

We can see how a concealed camera caught their devious plan in action. They weren’t going to let a tiny bit of height stand in the way of their desire to capture the feed. So they resorted to stacking up over each other. What’s more interesting is that they eventually succeeded in their brilliant plan.

A Memorable Dive

Some animals are incredibly fearful and conscious of their safety. They flee into a burrow or an adjacent nook at first sight of danger. This rabbit opted to jump into the first safe area it could locate after hearing a sound nearby. That safe zone, in this case, occurred to be a tube.

animalchannel.co

While we are not sure what this tube’s purpose is, it certainly isn’t helping the rabbit to hide. Although we can see the rabbits attempt to hide, we are unsure what happened next. We’ll keep our fingers crossed, hoping the rabbit’s safe.

The Epic Battle

It is undoubtedly a spectacle to watch two animals of extraordinary strength battle it out. And that’s exactly what we’ve got here. A bald eagle seems to have engaged in a fight with another eagle species. Their talons seem clenched, and they appear ready to go. They must be fighting over prey that they both want.

thechive.com

It’s likely that these creatures were looking for other birds to eat. It’s not that unusual for birds to eat those from their own species. While birds do have squabbles at times, it most likely occurs with birds of different species.

The Stare

Emus, ostriches, and other long-stretching birds have a reputation for being violent. We can see it plain as day right here. This bird wants to start something by gazing at the camera with his gigantic eyes. We are wondering how this bird even found the trail cam.

articlestone.com

It’s a shame as these birds are so beautiful. You’d think they’d like their picture taken! However, they seem like they really don’t want to be in the spotlight. This one appears to have its photo taken while simply going on about his day normally. It’s not easy being an introvert. Sorry for the inconvenience, buddy.

Chronicles of Aerial Attacks

Flying squirrels are well-known for their hostility towards other animals. They will definitely muff you if you try to get in their way. This undercover camera captured a flying squirrel leaping down on one of its favorite prey, the deer.

giveitlove.com

Although the deer looks like it has no idea about what’s happening behind the scenes, it will surely face the flying squirrels’ wrath. We feel bad for the poor deer. It was just trying to have a nice time alone, but the squirrel decided to ambush it.

Who Is Keeping An Eye On You?

You don’t expect to be watched when you’re out in the woods, hoping to spend some time alone. However, you can’t guarantee solitude when someone can hide a trail camera almost anywhere. Unforuntealy, that is precisely what this bear experienced.

daily-stuff.com

As we can see, the bear was trying to be unobtrusive until he encountered the camera. This furry creature had no idea he was being watched. And not just by anyone, but the entire world was watching. We sincerely apologize for invading its privacy.

The Taste of Revenge

Friendships can sometimes become a touch too close for comfort. You may find one of the more egregious examples of this here. Irritated by whatever happened before this moment between these two deer, the second one decided it was time to avenge the situation.

science-a2z.com

This time, the retaliation was a dish best served frigid. However, the other deer appears unfazed as he attempts to lick the other deer into strange acrimony. It’s also possible that this deer has been subjected to this bizarre treatment.

Sticking Tongue Out

We’ve all grown to appreciate a good derp face at some point. And here we see a full-fledged one, and that too by a deer. The deer appears to be having a good time while taking this photo. We can’t help but smile when we see this photo.

kafepauza.mk

The candid shot has a lot to offer. First and foremost, it is a perfect example of nature at its finest. The animal felt compelled to strike an unusual pose by sticking out its tongue for some reason. Perhaps it was attempting to catch a fly in the air. Maybe it was aware that it would be photographed. We’ll never know for sure…

The Wrathful Bird

Imagine being attacked by a vengeful bird, which you would never expect on an average day. Birds are equipped with these deadly tools known as talons. If these nails get a hold of you, you’re done for good. These razor-sharp, piercing talons are designed to rip one apart.

onedio.com

It appears that a deer was the one who eventually faced the bird’s wrath. We are concerned about the deer species as a whole. They are the most non-hostile species, minding their own business while the other animals try to attack them relentlessly.

No One Cares About The Fence

The purpose of putting up a fence is usually to keep something out or in. However, as we’ve seen time and time again, a fence isn’t always the most effective approach to accomplish this goal. This is especially true for burrowing creatures.

teddyfeed.com

Animals can quickly escape the confines of a fence if they are known to be burrowers. They compact their little bodies to the point that they can trespass through the wire barriers too. As a result, any animal that the fence tries to keep safe isn’t as secure as its owners might think.

The Happy Racoons

Raccoons can be considered intelligent. They can collaborate so well that they can stack themselves to get food. But this is what happens when they are simply given what they want. To say the least, the consequences are entertaining. We see them lounging in the plentiful and hearty feast.

livingmgz.co

Some of them appear to be rolling around in it. The scene is similar to kitties rolling about in catnip. Is it possible that the experiences are comparable? We’re not sure because none of us has developed a strong enough taste for deer feed to put this theory to the test. In any case, the raccoons appear to be having a good time.

A Hidden Romance

Sometimes it’s necessary to keep love a secret. The lovebirds could be discovered, scolded, and eventually separated if there was no veil of secrecy. On the other hand, they can avoid this terrible catastrophe by keeping the love hidden. We are privileged to see this sort of love!

obsev.com

While we don’t know what could transpire if someone uncovered these love birds, we do know it would be destructive— why else would they be saving their feelings for the night hours? Another idea could be that the beasts are partially nocturnal. Nonetheless, the hidden trail camera captured a rare moment of love between two beautiful creatures.

Deer Fashion

Trail cameras can sometimes capture more than just some sneaky animal love or an impending attack by a flying squirrel. In this case, instead of a deer in headlights, we see a deer in a bright light heading to the fashion show.

lyl.live

We can all take pride in the fact that this guy is clearly killing it in the world of deer fashion. Few can claim to have seen the pinnacle of deer fashion, but we can. We are also living for this rare shot.

I’m Unstoppable

Like we just saw, many animals can squeeze and press their bodies down to fit into small and compact areas. We see that in action here with a raccoon. It’s trying to sneak beneath a wire fence, likely searching for food.

Screenshot from YouTube

Life must be hard when you’re a small raccoon. Gathering up daily rations for food must not be an easy task. Throughout the list, we have seen raccoons applying all sorts of strategies to obtain their meals. Whether it’s stacking up on each other, squeezing under fences, or climbing atop another animal while it’s asleep, raccoons can do anything.

Birds Know No Limits

Birds are examples of animals that try to strike outside their natural size range. They will sometimes attack prey animals that are several times their size. Needless to say, such encounters rarely end well for either party. That poor deer…

fieldandstream.com

This time the bird in question is an owl. Furthermore, the animal bearing its wrathful presence is none other than a deer. This owl’s chances of winning are slim. However, it is unlikely that the deer will be scourge-free after this incident.

Leave My Antlers Alone!

Antlers evolved in deer for two reasons. The first is to keep other deers from stomping on their territory. The second is to impress prospective partners. Whichever way you look at it, it evolved to aid them in their endeavors.

redbubble.com

You didn’t expect that these antlers would be utilized to skewer other wild animals on occasion. And that is just what we see here. The animal, which could be a pig or a mountain lion, got caught between the horns. The next time you see a deer with huge antlers, you should steer clear of them.

The Mystical Orb

Throughout centuries, deers were associated with mystical powers. Maybe those sayings were accurate. We can see this power in full action here. The deer on the left of the photo wields an orb, which makes it look like a creature of great power. If you’re going to mess with a deer in the woods, we recommend not messing with this one.

AnusMaximusConquerorofAnus /Reddit

Something about a deer wielding an orb should frighten even the most skilled hunter. With that kind of orb, the thing can probably even tell the future. We would definitely love to get our fortune readings from this creature if it were true.

The Fight For Food

It’s not uncommon for animals to fight over food that often. This is particularly common in predatory species of birds such as falcons. Here, we have two such falcons who have developed a dislike for one another. Clearly, the reason for such hostilities is the carcass over which they are fighting.

trailcampro.com

We don’t know who will win this battle, but it will be a claw to the top. Given the guy on the left’s penchant for brandishing claws, we believe he has a good chance. But, on the other hand, the guy on the right seems like it would fight till its last breath.

When Death Was Knocking At The Door

We’ve all heard the story of the grim reaper reaping the souls of those who must transition with his scythe. On the other hand, most of us have never suspected that such a story was true. However, we have irrefutable proof in this case. Okay, most likely not. Anyone with even a smidgeon of scientific integrity will develop better alternative explanations for this guy’s existence.

Heavily_Armed_Noodle /Reddit

In any case, you’ve got a clever jokester with a nice-looking scythe here. If this photo inspires you to do anything, it should be to go out and get a similar-looking scythe to do some housework. Do you need to cut some corn? Here’s a nice, sharp scythe for you.

An Unusual Teamwork

It’s unusual for animals to group together to complete a task. Especially when they are of different species, it’d be like us collaborating with a wild bobcat to hunt a water buffalo which is highly unlikely. While the domestication of animals allowed Homo sapiens to coexist with domesticated felines and canines, it does not apply to other animals.

yaplakal.com

We have a smattering of animals gathered around a feeding device here. While we’re not sure what it’s feeding, the animals seem to be trying to get a hold of it. However, it appears that they are having a hard time cooperating.

When The Roles Are Reversed

This coyote appears to be backed into a corner by the two deer looming upon its flanks. Deers’ are typically known to flee at the slightest noise, so it’s surprising to see them linger long enough for the coyote to bring out its fangs.

daily-stuff.com

Surprisingly, the deer do not appear to be alarmed by this usually fearsome predator. Either way, we are proud of the deer species for this particular instance. It finally gathered up the courage to face a predator. Regardless of the outcome, we’re pleased.

The Hovering Deer

“Swiggty Swooty, I’m hovering for booty,” the owner captioned the photo as such. We didn’t want to be too rash in assuming the buck’s intentions. Who knows why he started levitating in the first place. This is a skill we hadn’t learned deer acquired.

bangordailynews.com

Perhaps he’d just made a deal with an ancient eldritch entity from an incomprehensible, vile place beyond the fading light of our farthest stars… or maybe he’d simply made pals with Peter Pan, the flying boy. What are the chances?

The Bigfoot Situation

To be honest, we have no idea what that object in question is. It may be the shadow of an unusual animal or something speeding past the camera. Whatever the reasons are, it won’t be as interesting as assuming a Bigfoot was out for a stroll.

duluthnewstribune.com

it’s most likely just some guy in a strange outfit on his way to his friend’s costume party or maybe it’s just a very thick tree. It’s impossible to say for sure if this is the notorious and elusive Bigfoot monster, but it really looks like him.

The Turkey Gang

Turkeys are relatively peaceful and innocent creatures. However, while a single turkey may not appear to be scary, a gang of turkeys can terrify even the most intrepid hunter. Their expressions are truly disturbing. We would suggest keeping an eye out for these feathered friends.

deerlab.com

We’re witnessing what might be a very ominous scenario. We have a group of scary turkeys here that can make one think Armageddon is approaching. And if the image does not hit you in this way, all you have to do is zoom in.

The Bipedal Deer

For several reasons, humans are unique in the world. Anthropologists frequently claim that one of these reasons is that we evolved from trees and gradually became bipedal, able to walk on two legs. We would be able to use our newly acquired ability to free up our hands for weapons and other skilled tasks.

yunusolgun.com

Bipedal is a term used to describe an animal that walks on two legs, most commonly a human. Most folks think that deer walk on four legs, but some deer prefer to walk on two hooves as this photo shows.

It’s A Riot

With hidden trail cameras, you may come across something common but not well known. A swarm of coyotes is howling at the moon. Actually, no. The underlying reason these coyotes howl is to communicate with one another or to ward off competitors for a new kill. Their shouts aren’t sparked by the moon alone.

cursedimages /Twitter

While coyotes are known to do this, it is rare for such actions to be caught in a trail camera. We can now see these remarkable canines leaning back in their collars, allowing their howls to echo across the broad plains. You mean even be lucky enough to hear it if you’re outside and in an area close by.

Upscale Dining

Trail cameras can sometimes capture more than just animal violence. They occasionally find an animal in one of its mundane activities— eating. Here we see an otter trying to grab a late-night snack. He is eating some kind of fish. Even though it is not spiced or barbequed, the otter is still most likely relishing in it.

dailycamera.com

The otter must be rejoicing after its catch. It was probably a refreshing reward after a long and exhausting swim. Whether it was hard-earned or not, the fish was most likely delicious.  We’re glad the cam captured the moment on film.
